Why it's worth the trip: Yes, we can hear the snickers already. ("Fall foliage? In Vegas???") And, no, we're not talking about any themed-hotel's faux forest.

This is the real deal, but it's outside The Strip - specifically, a half-hour west of the city to the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. Area residents simply refer to it as Mount Charleston, since it's the highest mountain - at nearly 12,000 feet.

The scene is one of natural springs, towering canyons and bristlecone pines (a unique species of pine tree that can survive thousands of years). The locale also doesn't disappoint on the fall foliage front: Aspens are the big attraction. Plus, there are hiking, bird-watching and other opportunities for outdoor adventure.

Peak of the season: Late September to mid October.
