
You're talking the Pacific Northwest at its most scenic, but in the fall the area puts on an even greater show, as the "colorful display of big-leaf maple, cottonwood and Oregon ash trees is unmasked," according to the Travel Channel.
The highway, the first of its kind to be designated a National Historic Landmark, takes you through the gorge, following a 74-mile path to let you take in the waterfalls, canyons and cliffs that are part of the gorge.
Peak of the season: Mid September to mid October.
