NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: I'm a consultant to the World Trade Organization in Uzbekistan. I want to start my own business, but I'm confused. I want to do business with the U.S. and Canada, but I need money and I'm afraid of failing. Can you help me?
Your first challenge is to figure out what skills or expertise you possess that would have value to business people in those countries. Your current jobs should put you in an excellent position to collect information and make contacts with business people overseas.
Ask the business consultants and entrepreneurs you are working with to help you come up with some ideas. One idea is to help overseas companies import goods and services to customers in your country. If you put deals together, you would be paid a fee or a commission. Before going any further, you'll need to find out all the rules and regulations affecting international trade, so you can speak with authority.
Starting your own business is very scary. You should have at least six months of living expenses saved up so you can pay your bills and feed your family while you are starting your new venture.
