NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Regal Food Service is recalling its 6.5-ounce double cheeseburgers because they could be contaminated with an organism called Listeria monocytogenes. This organism can cause serious and even fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system.
Some short-term symptoms that may occur in healthy individuals are high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
    No illnesses have been reported.
The Houston company sold these cheeseburgers to wholesale outlets and distributed them to convenience stores, truck stops and vending machines in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Florida, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama.
The ready-to-eat double cheeseburgers consist of two meat patties, two cheese slices, and two pieces of bread. They come in a 6.5-ounce molded clear plastic package marked with a four-digit code.  All of these cheeseburgers have been recalled.
The presence of Listeria monocytogenes in this product was revealed after testing by the Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA and Regal Food Service are currently investigating the source of the problem and have suspended production.
Consumers who have purchased these cheeseburgers are urged to return them for a full refund and those with questions can contact the company at 1-800-683-7378.  Back to top
