NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Intel Corp. introduced its fastest chip for desktop personal computers Monday, once again overtaking rival Advanced Micro Devices Corp. in the race for the speediest microprocessor.
Intel’s (INTC) launch of its 800-MHz Pentium III processor comes months ahead of schedule. Company officials previously said the new chip would be available sometime in the first half of 2000.
The move gives Intel the edge over AMD (AMD), whose fastest model is the 750-MHz Athlon chip. AMD previously had beaten Intel to the 700-MHz mark.
AMD won’t lag Intel for long, however. The company plans to introduce its own 800-MHz chip in the first quarter of 2000.
Intel priced the 800-MHz Pentium III at $851 in 1,000-unit quantities. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based firm also introduced a 750-MHz model, priced at $803 in 1,000-unit quantities. Both units are available on a limited basis, with widespread availability later in the first quarter.
Intel shares rose 1/8 to 82-3/16 in morning trade. AMD shares slipped 1/4 to 28-9/16. Back to top
