Ford recalls 703,000 cars

Potential lighting problem on Contour, Mystique models prompts recall

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Ford Motor Co., the world's second-biggest automaker, said Monday it is recalling 703,000 of its Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique cars built between 1996 and 1998 because of a wiring problem that can cause the instrument panel lighting and tail lights to stop working.
The recall was not spurred by any reports of accidents or injuries related to the lighting problem, Ford said in a statement. Owners of the vehicles will be notified by mail to arrange with their dealer to have the headlight switch wiring harness connected replaced and the headlight switch examined and replaced, if necessary, at no charge.
The announcement is the third widespread recall the Dearborn, Mich.-based company has announced this year. In March, Ford ordered 900,000 Aerostar vehicles recalled because of a faulty accessory power circuit, which could short circuit and possibly cause engine overheating, smoke and fire. In April, Ford recalled 279,000 Lincoln Town Cars, Mercury Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria vehicles with cruise-control devices that could cause a fire.
Ford shares ended the day Monday down 5/16 at 53-1/8.
