NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Lucent Technologies will supply AT&T with $1 billion in equipment and services for building its DigitalPCS network and other wireless communication services, the company announced Monday.
The Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent said the four-year agreement covers the building of AT&T's new 1,900MHz networks, enhancing the current 850MHz networks, along with its ongoing wireless business.
Among the equipment Lucent (LU) said it is providing to New York-based AT&T are wireless base stations and switching stations. It said the new equipment will allow AT&T to more than double the capacity it can support in the same wireless spectrum.
"With Lucent as one of our strategic vendors we will maintain our market leadership in our deployment of wireless voice and data services," said Dan Hesse, president of AT&T Wireless Services.
Lucent consists of the former Bell Laboratories unit of AT&T. Its shares closed Friday at 102-1/16, up 1/16. AT&T (T) closed Friday at 83-1/16, up 1-3/16. Back to top
