Airbags in Ram vans and wagons could deploy accidentally
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - DaimlerChrysler AG is recalling 328,500 full-size Dodge Ram vans and wagons because of faulty airbags.
Two groups are affected by the recall.
The first group consists of 274,000 model year 1995-1997 vehicles, whose airbags may accidentally deploy if the control module, located beneath the driver's seat, becomes corroded by water running across the floor mat. In another 54,500 model year 1998 vehicles, the airbag may be deployed inadvertently when a metal object strikes the bag's control module.
No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported due to the defect.
Owners of the 1998 vehicles will be notified of the recall this week and owners of the 1995-1997 vehicles will be contacted next month.
DaimlerChrysler plans to replace the airbag control modules and install protective covers at no cost. If the airbag warning light goes on before customers are notified, they should see their car dealers as soon as possible.
